His Plans are to Save Us
About six weeks before my son, Terry, died, he and I stood in our backyard looking at a full rainbow stretching across our property. It was the first complete rainbow I had ever seen. It was a sunny day, and it had not rained. I couldn’t fit the entire arc into the frame where it seemed to touch both ends of our property, but I captured most of it with my camera. After taking the photos, I told him, “Terry, that is a sign from God that He loves us and His plans are not to destroy us, but to save us.”
Little did I know that my world as I knew it would come to an end almost two months later when he was killed in a motorcycle accident.
After returning home from the evening of his visitation, a rainbow once again appeared. This time it enwrapped our home. The Scripture verse I shared with Terry came back to me. It was almost as though God were saying, “I love him and did not destroy him. I saved him.” I could almost hear Terry telling me the same. God’s promise to save us is the foundation of my faith and the reason this page is called “To Infinity.” God’s love does not end. His promises do not fade. His plan is eternal.
Even in grief, we are called to hope. We can be confident in God’s promise of eternal life to all who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. We can draw hope from His word, which assures us that all His plans are rooted in love.
Many studies show that spiritual beliefs can protect people from suicide by offering hope, meaning, and a sense of connection when life feels overwhelming. Faith gives people a framework for understanding suffering, a reminder that their life has purpose, and a belief that God is present even in the darkest moments. Spiritual communities also provide support, encouragement, and a place to belong—powerful protections against despair. Researchers have found that people who regularly engage in their faith, whether through prayer, Scripture, worship, or fellowship, often experience greater resilience and lower rates of suicidal thoughts. While faith is not a substitute for professional help, it can be a vital source of strength that helps people hold on, reach out, and choose life.
